The following is extracted from The Scot's Peerage:

James Hamilton, Lord of Cadzow, married Princess Mary, sister of King James III., and had James Hamilton, second Lord of Hamilton and first Earl of Arran, married Janet Beaton, by whom he had James Hamilton, second Earl of Arran, married 1532 Margaret, daughter of James Douglas, third Earl of Morton, by a daughter of King James IV. and Margaret Boyd, by whom he had John Hamilton, first Marquis, who had Sir John Hamilton of Lettrick, who married Jean, daughter of Alexander Campbell, Bishop of Brechin, of the Ardkinglass line and had:

•  Sir John Hamilton of Carriden, first Lord Bargany, who married a daughter of William Douglas, first Marquis of Douglas, and had:

  • Ann Hamilton, married Sir Patrick Houstoun, first Baronet, whose second son Patrick went to Georgia and eventually by failure of heirs male of elder line became the fifth Baronet.
