Samuel Newell Smith, son of Samuel Smith. Born in Windsor, Vt., Oct. 30, 1796; died (place not stated). Married Lois Williams (date and place not stated).

Children:

(1) Mary Elizabeth Smith-Married Chas. E. Bristol (son of Chas. Bristol, of Wasborn, Conn.), at Middletown, Wis., Jan. 10, 1861.

Children:

(a) John Catlin Bristol, born Oct. 24, 1801; died Sept. 14, 1862.
(b) Elsey Louise Bristol, born Aug. 19, 1863.
(c) Lucy Elizabeth Bristol, born Dec. 19, 1867.

(2) William Elisha Smith-Married Debora A. Miles. He died in the Civil War. Son, Charles. Lilla.

(3) John Francis Smith-Married Lizzie Smith, of Castleton, Vt., in 1862. Married (2d) Sarah Sears. Had a son, Wallace, in service in World War. He (John) was many years a Missionary in Marsavan, Turkey. He died of the effects of a Turkish massacre.

(a) Jane Smith, born at Marsevan, Turkey. Married Harvey Wingate, of Northfield, Minn. Children: Henry and Arthur.
(b) Henry Francis Smith, born in 1872. Married Lillian Parker, of Mason City, Iowa. Is a Minister of the Cong. Church at Medford, Mass. Was Chaplain in the Army.
(c) Bertha Smith, born in 1864 in Turkey. Died a Missionary there.

(4) Samuel Hart Smith-Married Emma D. Sanford. Born Apr. 5, 1838. Died Dec. 28, 1870.

Children:

(a) Ida May Smith, born in Lansing, Minn., Sept. 18, 1857. Died Mch. 9, 1870.

(b) Julia Lois Smith, born in Middletown, Wis., July 16, 1857. Married Norman Bloss, of Kansas.

Children:

(1) Minnie Bloss. Married Roy Matlock. Children: Margery and Joe.
(2) Lulie Bloss. Married Dr. W. F. Stokes, of Chicago. Children: Ruth, born Apr. 21, 1902; William, born June 23, 1906.

(c) James Hart Smith, born Mch. 2, 1862. Married Jennie York Oct. 14, 1903.

Children:

(1) Oscar Samuel Smith, born Sept. 13, 1906.
(2) Eleanor Elizabeth Smith, born Apr. 1, 1908.
(3) Alice Louise Smith, born Sept. 7, 1909.
(4) Clarence Henry Smith, born Sept. 3, 1911.
(5) Sanford James Smith, born Mch. 23, 1914.

(d) Emma Sanford Smith, born July 12, 1865. Married Dr. C. A. Ullerich, of Chicago, Ill.

Children:

(1) Helen Ullerich, Assistant in the Criminal Court, Chicago, Ill. Two (2) sons, died in infancy.

(e) Minnie Sophia Smith, born Mch. 28, 1867; died Feb. 14, 1871.

(f) Mattie Dickerson Smith, born Dec. 20, 1869. Married D. H. Johnson, Waltham, Minn. Died Oct. 1, 1903.

Children:

(1) Vela Irene Johnson (a teacher).
(2) Forrest Sanford Johnson-Married Lillian Scott, 1918. Child: Jean Provost Scott.

(5) Martha Lois Smith. Married Manley Sanford, at Madison, Wis.

(a) Emma Elizabeth Sanford, born June 7, 1857, at Lansing, Mich.
(b) James Francis Sanford, born Mch., 18.59; died Aug. 3, 1860.
(c) Frederick Manley Sanford, born Dec. 1, 1861.
(d) John Samuel Sanford, born Jan. 21. 1865.
(e) Stella Smith Sanford, born Aug. 15, 1867.
(f) Susan Smith Sanford, born Sept. 10, 1870.

(6) Henry Dickerson Smith. Born at Windsor, Vt., Jan. 11, 1839. Died at Clarendon. Ark., July 10, 1862 (in Civil War, Co. B, 11th Wis. Inf.). Presumably unmarried.

(7) Lucy Sopiah Smith. Born at Rochester, Vt. Married Willet S. Main, at Middletown, Wis., June 8, 1867.

Children:

(a) Elyda Main, born Oct. 16, 1868; died Mch. -, 186-.
(b) Susan Main, born Dec. 21, 1870. Married Charles Spooner.

Children:

(1) Dorothy Spooner, born Nov. 1, 1897.

(c) Annie Elizabeth Main, born Feb. 6, 1874. Married Rev. A. J. Kenton.

(3) Judson Main, born Feb. 5, 1909, at Muscatine, Iowa.

(e) Lois Williams Main. Married Ogden ?; 3 children.

(8) Emily Lois Smith-Born June 1, 1849; died Feb. 2, 1860.

(9) Julia Ingersol Smith- died at Rochester, Vt. (presumably unmarried).

(10) Susan Carrol Smith-Married Joseph Goodwin. Died Nov. 1, 1904.

Children:

(a) John Goodwin, died in Middletown, Wis.
(b) Sophia Goodwin, born in 1868.
(c) Eltha Lois Goodwin, died in Middletown, Wis.

(11) Child Smith. Died in infancy (no other information).

NOTE: The foregoing information of the family of Samuel N. Smith, son of Samuel Smith, son of Steel Smith, of Farmington, Conn., and Windsor, Vt., 1765 to 1812, is furnished by Mr. James H.
