Alexander Painter Genealogy

(2) ALEXANDER PAINTER, the second son of Christian and Mary E. Painter, was born about 1777. (Exact age is unknown.) He was apprenticed, and for that reason was kept in ignorance of his true age, thereby rendering two or three years of undue service. He was old enough to vote for Thomas Jefferson for President in the fall of 1799, but may have been 23 years of age instead of 21. From his great love of horses, he was made a teamster, in which he certainly was proficient. In the year 1805, when near 28 years of age, he was united in marriage to Mary Thompson, and lived with her near Timberville, Rockingham Co., Va., for about nineteen years. During this time most of their children were born. In 1824 he sold his property and moved 150 miles south to Cave Springs. then in Botatourt County, but since 1856 the southern portion of which has become Roanoke County. Here he bought a farm of 214 acres for $1,926, from L. H. Jones, on Mud Lick Creek, which farm lies north of Cave Springs, near the old Sugar Loaf Mountain. Here he lived about six years and here also lived many of his wife's relatives, the Sloans and Trouts. Here his children attended school, and here David, his oldest son, and Jane Hatton, who afterwards became his wife, were school children together. Her relatives. the Armstrongs and the McCampbells. also lived here. In 1830 Alexander Painter, with his family, moved to Indiana, and purchased from Joseph Van Metre the farm at the head of Fall Creek, where William A. Painter now resides. To them were born five sons and five daughters.
