Donald McKenzie Genealogy

Donald McKenzie, the ancestor of the Atwood family of Georgia, appears to have been one of the Highland Clan who accompanied John More McIntosh1, the Highland Chieftain, to Georgia. He had granted to him by King George III a tract of land called "Oak Hill," near Darien, Ga. He married Mary Merriman, daughter it is said of an English officer, and it is stated that she came to Georgia in the family of General Oglethorpe. Among the early settlers in the Colony we find the name of Merriman. John Cooper, connected with the Jones family of Georgia, married a Miss Merriman.

Donald McKenzie and Mary Merriman had a daughter, Ann McKenzie, who lived all of her life of 101 years at "Cedar Point," a tract of land granted to William Johnston. She was born about 1733 and died in 1834. She married John McIntosh2 and they had a son, John Lachlan McIntosh, who married Margaret McCullough and had a daughter, Ann Margaret McIntosh, who married Henry Skelton Atwood and had:

  •  James Alfred Atwood, married Ann Livingston Bayard.

  •  Ruth Ann Atwood, married Dr. William Elliott Dunwody.

  •  William Henry Atwood, married first, Miss Butts; second, Louise Butts.

  •  Jane Atwood, married George Camp.

  •  George Elliott Atwood, married Sophie La Roche.

  •  John McIntosh Atwood, married first, Maria La Roche; second, Clare La Roche.

  •  Matilda Atwood, married Charles Hopkins.

  •  Margaret Atwood, married Dr. Geiger.

Notes

  1. Among the Mclntoshes who arrived in Georgia was a scion of the old McIntosh of Holme, Cadets of McIntosh of McIntosh, as also the McIntoshes of Mala or Mallow.

  2. The family of John McIntosh lived at Cedar Point, which was granted to William Johnston. Among the other settlers of the Darien Colony we find the McCullochs, Cuthberts, &c. (See History of Georgia.)
