James Asheton Bayard Genealogy

Dr. James Asheton Bayard,¹ brother of Col. John Bayard (sons of James Bayard and Mary Asheton), married Ann Hodge, sister of Margaret Hodge who married Col. John Bayard (daughters of Andrew Hodge and Margaret McCulloch), and had:

•  John Hodge Bayard, born Jan. 11, 1762; settled in Cumberland County, Maryland; married and had issue; died 1820.

•  Jane Bayard, born Feb. 13, 1765; never married.

•  James Asheton Bayard, a most distinguished citizen, U. S. Senator, &c., was born July 28, 1767, (died Wilmington, Delaware, August 6, 1815; married 1795, Ann Bassett, daughter of Senator Richard Bassett, of Delaware, a prominent citizen, and had:

  • 1. Richard Bayard, married Miss Carroll.

  • 2. Caroline Bayard.

  • 3. James Asheton Bayard, married Miss Francis, of Philadelphia.

  • 4. Edward Bayard, married Miss Johnson of New York.

  • 5. Mary Bayard.

  • 6. Henry M. Bayard.

Notes:

1. The descendants of this line of Bayards were most distinguished, producing no less than five U. S. Senators.
